The Golden State Marathon Series started as an idea back in 2007 in response to the difficulty I found in trying to locate a method for displaying all my finisher’s medals from different running events. Trying to place them all in a frame proved not only to be too impractical, but it was also too expensive and the frame too heavy to mount on a wall. At first I kept my medal collection in a dresser drawer at home, then I laid them out over empty bookcase shelves, and even tried a medal “wall rack.” Nothing really satisfied what I considered to be an adequate means of displaying my running achievements. The problem was further compounded by the fact I was continually adding to my collection, thereby expanding their numbers.
Then it dawned on me I had been going about everything entirely the wrong way. Of course trying to frame or display 10, 25, or 50 medals was going to be difficult … that’s just too many items to try and display all at once. “Wouldn’t it be easier,” I thought “if I could find one really well made medal to represent all these other medals I have?” The only problem was, after much searching, I couldn’t find anything exactly like that. There were plenty of horribly low quality, prefabricated, generic running achievement medals and awards out there, but none of them really reflected the magnitude of the achievement they were meant to represent.
One of the things that sets quality awards apart from everything else is the attention to detail, the caliber of the materials used, and the manner in which they are presented. If one sees an Olympic medal, for example, the quality is immediately apparent to the viewer even though they may not be able to recognize the process by which the medal was created, or the materials from which it came. It looks impressive, and it really is that viscerally simple.
It became obvious to me after years of searching and countless inquiries if I was going to find something that would meet my standards I would have to make it myself.
That is exactly how the Golden State Marathon Series came into being – a natural response to an unaddressed need facing most endurance runners in the State of California.
